Fandango 5: A Monster Weekend?

Cloverfield Sam Emerson / Paramount Pictures

I attended the Cloverfield premiere here in Hollywood Wednesday night, and from the electricity of the crowd, I have a feeling this movie will be big. Monstrous. Okay, bad joke, but take a look at this week's Fandango 5 (based on preshow ticket sales and featured on fandango.com's Fan Buzz Top 10 page). It's neck and neck between Hannah Montana in 3-D (which still doesn't open for weeks!) and the J.J. Abrams-produced event movie.

After that, films like The Bucket List, Juno and 27 Dresses barely round out the list. Look for Cloverfield to put up enormous box-office numbers this weekend and to also have the legs to close out January. I hate to use the word must-see, so I'll tell you this: The first film of 2008 you have to see hits theaters tomorrow. Here's the list:

Fandango5

  1. Cloverfield: 38 percent of ticket sales
  2. Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert: 30 percent
  3. 27 Dresses: 4 percent
  4. The Bucket List: 3 percent
  5. Juno: 2 percent

Fandango 5: Nic Nabs More Treasure

National Treasure: Book of Secrets Disney Enterprises

Happy New Year, everybody! After an impressive holiday run, Nic Cage and the second installment of National Treasure still sit atop the Fandango 5 (based on preshow ticket sales and featured on fandango.com's Fan Buzz Top 10 page).

It's amazing that an entire generation of kids only knows Cage as the treasure hunter or as Johnny Blaze from Ghost Rider, right? Raising Arizona, anybody? That same generation of kids is also losing its mind for Hannah Montana, as her 3-D concert film remains a favorite on our list.

Rounding out the 5 are two of my favorite films of 2007: I Am Legend and Juno. Also, Charlie Wilson's War is picking up steam after scoring tons of Golden Globe noms. That said, welcome to 2008, errrybody! I hope you guys continue to use Fandango in the new year and check back with the Lyons Den every Thursday for the top movies in the country. Peace!

Wow! Crazy week on the Fandango 5 (featured on fandango.com's Fan Buzz Top 10 page): Not only has one movie scored 49 percent of preshow ticket sales, but it's something that doesn't even hit until February. Plus, it's a documentary that's only opening for one week. That's unprecedented.

Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, a 3-D Imax flick based on a character from the Disney Channel, already has parents scooping tickets. And since it'll only be in theaters for a week, make your plans now folks—or miss it.

The week's "normal" movies can't quite compete, but fantasy epic The Golden Compass significantly edged out Beowulf and Enchanted. Last but not least is Juno, one of my favorite films of the year and sure to be a favorite come awards show season.

That's it folks. I'm at the Bahamas International Film Festival, so I have to bounce. More movies and drinks with umbrellas for me.

  2. The Golden Compass: 19 percent
  3. Beowulf: 4 percent
