Catch and Release
Review in a Hurry: Think of this gooey, sloppy rom-com as your heart-shaped box o' chocolates: not really that special, not really something you wanted—but still, it somehow hits the spot.
The Bigger Picture: Here's a movie with Valentine's Day written all over it.
In that corner, you've got Jennifer Garner, dressed down in a crunchy granola ensemble as she mourns the sudden death of her fiancé. And in this corner, Timothy Olyphant, sexy bad boy. Caught in the middle, there's us. Oh, and also a little bit of comic relief from Kevin Smith, who basically plays himself. (So much so, that in real life he's also BFF with Garner's hubby, like he is here.) Oh, and why not throw in Juliette Lewis as a New Agey "masseuse" with a talent for happy endings. Wouldn't be a romantic comedy without one, right?
Garner plays Gray Wheeler, who finds out her cookie-cutter fiancé had been doing some downright shady stuff. That's right, there's something fishy going on here, and she's getting to the bottom of it—with help from hubby's buddies.
Through it all, Little Miss Perfect finds out she may not have had the white picket fence after all, and in a whole opposites-attract thing she, of course, falls for Olyphant, king of the one-night stands, who bangs a server in the bathroom at his friend's funeral.
Ah, to be young, (almost) widowed and in love!
Writer-director Susannah Grant, of Erin Brockovich fame, mixes in the funny with the sappy. All in all, a good date movie with a nice twist—even if you saw it coming.
The 180—a Second Opinion: It'd be easy to hate this movie, too: Smith and Lewis just do what they always do, Garner's cutesy act can be grating, and if you're looking for nuance, look further. If you get bored, though, you can always play spot the bump (Garner was pregnant during the shoot).
