Hot-buttered opinion on the latest flicks

Harsh Times

A-

The poster for Harsh Times looks goofy as all hell. Ooh, Christian Bale’s so scary because he has tattoos!

Fortunately, the movie’s a good deal better than that. Writer-director David Ayer wrote the script for Training Day, and this more or less plays as a prequel. Instead of the story about a crooked cop, Christian Bale plays Jim, a former army ranger who aspires to be a crooked cop!

The comparison wouldn’t be complete without a partner who’s slightly freaked out by his pal’s behavior, so we have Freddy Rodríguez, as Jim’s best friend, who wants to live a respectable life with his hot girl (Eva Longoria) but keeps getting pressured into drinking beer, smoking blunts and committing petty theft.

Despite their dubious behavior, both characters seem on their way to obtaining dream jobs, but alas, Jim insists they take that one last trip to Mexico...The ending’s rather predictable, unfortunately, but the wild ride there is worth it.
