Mark Ruffalo's younger brother has been hospitalized in Los Angeles and listed in critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to his head early Monday.

Ruffalo's publicist, Jessica Kolstad, confirmed to E! News that 39-year-old hairsylist Scott Ruffalo was fighting for his life after the incident. She had no additional comment on behalf of the actor.

Beverly Hills Police called the shooting, which took place at Scott's apartment, "suspicious," but they have yet to classify the tragic event as a criminal occurrence.

"Our detectives will not say if it was a shooting," Beverly Hills Police Department spokesman Tony Lee told E! News. "All we can say is that we are investigating some suspicious circumstance that [occurred] early Monday morning."

While the events leading up to the 39-year-old's extremely serious injury remain unclear, Lee confirmed that the incident took place around 1 a.m.

It's unclear who, if anyone, else was involved in the shooting, though a police investigation into the incident has been opened.

Scott Ruffalo, who is two years younger than his Zodiac-starring brother, has been a licensed cosmetologist in California since 1991. He is married to Luzelena Ruffalo and has one stepdaughter.
