Colmes Untangles Hannity

Thank goodness Stewart and Colbert don't feel this way.

Deciding that his head-butting days are behind him, Alan Colmes of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes is leaving his right-wing other half behind after 12 years.

"Although it's bittersweet to leave one of the longest marriages on cable news, I'm proud that both [Sean Hannity] and I remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so many years, " Colmes said in a statement on his website in announcing his departure from the hotbed of political contention that marked their cable news staple.

Hannity & Colmes, which never once strayed from its nightly 9 p.m. time slot, averaged 3.3 million viewers a night in October, second only to The O'Reilly Factor in all of cable news.

But the liberal-minded Colmes isn't straying too far from his longtime home: He inked a new deal with Fox News last month that will keep him around until at least 2012, as a commentator-at-large and as host of his nightly radio program, The Alan Colmes Show. A new weekend spot on TV is also a possibility.

And in the meantime, his Sarah Palin-loving former cohost is probably just going to go it alone. The New York Times reports that, while no final decision has been made, the network may use the weekend program Hannity's America as a template for a solo weekday venture.

"Not only has Alan been a remarkable cohost, he’s been a great friend which is rare in this industry," the fire-breathing pundit said. "I’ll genuinely miss sparring with such a skillful debate partner."
