Batman's sidekick just got sidelined.

The CW has nixed plans to go into production on The Graysons, an hour-long drama that was set to revolve around the young Robin's life prior to meeting up with the Caped Crusader.

"The studio has opted not to go forward with the development of The Graysons at this time as the concept doesn't fit the current strategy for the Batman franchise," the producing studio, Warner Bros. TV, said in a statement.

According to Variety, the would-be origin story—which would have followed Robin's alter ego Dick "D.J." Grayson—was met with some resistance by Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan, who never signed off on the series.

Nolan was reportedly "uncomfortable" with the notion of the spinoff, though CW execs insist his feelings about the project did not affect their decision.

Still, according to Variety, Warner Bros. is going to "rethink its DC Comics strategy" entirely and the Graysons' abandonment was simply the victim of a larger game plan, which has also held up the long-gestating Justice League Mortal, a project Nolan has also grumbled about.

Announced last month and in the earliest stages of production, The Graysons was being groomed as a replacement to the Superman-themed Smallville—now once again in need of a prime-time successor.
