Mum's the Word on Iron Man

Iron Man Paramount Pictures

Iron Man's mouth is sealed tight. At least for now.

Paramount wasn't releasing box-office estimates from the film's sneak preview screenings Thursday night.

While silence in Hollywood is usually deadly, Box Office Mojo's Brandon Gray doesn't think that's the case with the superhero movie.

"Paramount being mum about Iron Man's Thursday night gross is not cause for alarm in terms of the movie's popularity," Gray said today. "It has more to do with reporting policy, or the way studios are trying to report grosses these days."

Or, in other words: "It's about pumping up the weekend gross."

Reached for comment, Paramount said it would report its Thursday grosses separately from the weekend gross, but that, no, it wasn't going to report anything until Sunday. The studio similarly held its fire over last summer's Transformers.

Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the armored hero, officially opens today. The reputedly $186 million movie has been projected to take in anywhere from $50 million to $100 million in its first three days.

Its first three official days.

Any creative numbers-crunching arguably would be fitting, given that Iron Man is considered the summer's first movie—seven weeks before summer actually begins.
