Chicks in Flicks: Glamour to the Rescue?

Let me get the facts out of the way so we can go on to the good stuff. Glamour magazine asked three actresses—Kirsten Dunst, Kate Hudson and Rita Wilson—to direct short films based on essays written by Glamour readers. Last night was the big red-carpet rollout—the Glamour Reel Moments Presented by Clinique—and in case you didn't make it, you can watch the films come Saturday, when they go online. (You can also check out what Planet Gossip has to say, as they hit this party, too.)
On the red carpet, Hudson was aglow, happy and wearing the most gorgeous fitted black skirt. Papa Kurt Russell is a true gentleman, too, eschewing the red carpet and slinking in just as the lights were dimming.
Weirdly, Dunst continues to act shy as a little ingénue, even though she's a 25-year-old woman. So, what else did I learn?
1. Chevy Chase Is Still Funny: Yes, Chase, who appears in Kate's short, still has his funny bone intact, as he demonstrated on Saturday Night Live this weekend (he'll be back, I'm told). And he gave a great answer when I asked why there aren't more women directors: "They're just not as good as men."
Yes, he was kidding. Yes, he got serious: "There's always going to be that underlying prejudice, so you need these kinds of programs to show you how good women are. So, I don't understand prejudice."
Me neither, Mr. Chase. But I do understand funny, and this is it. After he finishes doing press, he's just standing there. He looks at his handler: "Is there any water, or is this how it's gonna be?"

2. Jeanne Tripplehorn Wants to See Your Cash: The lovely Jeanne Tripplehorn, who deserves a carton of Emmys for her work on Big Love, is just as likable as her Glamour director Rita Wilson. And as Rita's hubby Tom Hanks is a Love producer, I had to wonder if Jeanne, Rita and Tom are spending 24/7 together. "I feel like a member of the Hanks-Wilson family," she said. "I mean, this is a talented bunch and fun to be around."
So anyway, she is a smart, working actress. Who better to ask about all this Warner Bros. scandal?
"I've been reading about this," she began. "Money talks in this town, and that's a fact. If you want to see films about women, you've got to step up with your money and you've got to go to movies. The guys are going out and seeing their action flicks, but women...you can't stay home. Go to the theater. Put your money down."
3. Rita Wilson Doesn't Want to Direct Transformers 2, Thank You Very Much: So, which of these actresses is most likely to lens up and make a big feature? My money is on Rita. Hey, she's a great producer, and she'll have Tripplehorn pushing her.
"It would have to be about people and about a human experience," she said. "Don't give me any special-effects things. I would be terrified. I wouldn't know what to do with that. But anything that has a human sort to it would make me very happy."
Me too.
