Top 10 High School Girls Movies: We Got a Winner
Paramount Pictures
Thank you all so much for your passionate commitment to filling the No. 10 spot in our High School Is Hell for Girls list. Omigod, you movie lovers dazzled me so with your input! I so side with Elltee, who chides me for not mentioning at least one John Cusack movie. Bad me! And jennDoll, who mentions the African anteater ritual from Can't Buy Me Love, has a damn good point. Kelly, I feel you—Some Kind of Wonderful is awesome, but for me it's all about Eric Stoltz. Misty, She's All That is too easy for me—ah, if only we chicks could pull off the glasses and become overnight hotties.
Alas, after much ado it came down to three finalists: Heathers, Can't Hardly Wait and Grease.
It's like this. Heathers is a farce. It's much more a send-up of teen life than a cathartic movie. I've been a "Heather" for Halloween. It's too campy, you know? Can't Hardly Wait is so packed with earnest heart that I want to hug it every time I watch it. But there's something...missing. It doesn't have the mass-adoration-inducing pizzazz.
Which is why I hereby declare Grease to be the No. 10 spot. It's campy like Heathers but far more grounded and weepy. Who doesn't feel for Sandy when she watches the cool kids have their car race? And who doesn't feel for Rizzo when she is the victim of bun-in-the-oven gossip? And it has the dynamic flair of Can't Hardly Wait. We root for everyone here, even that wretched phony Patty Simcox.
