They've always sparkled for special occasions, but last year, sequins began popping up more regularly, especially in Diane Von Furstenberg and French Connection collections. Just about everyone in Hollywood grabbed the two top dresses, FCUK's gold shift and DVF's black wrap, shown above.
But now the disco-ball, pageant-queen and stage-girl staple has turned into a Tinseltown must. Celebs young and old are slipping into sparkly numbers across the globe to ensure they stand out at every red carpet event.

Alice + Olivia's flirty frocks are currently a popular choice among the stars. The line's designer, Stacey Bendet, thought sequins were a "fun and flashy way to update the shift and minidresses of the season," so she bedazzled hers for this season. Bendet made the trend her own by keeping to Alice + Olivia's signature striped patterns (like the ones above). Getting into the glittery spirit, Karl Lagerfeld even showcased sequined his-and-hers robes for Chanel's 2007-08 Cruise collection!

With designers leading the way, sequined garb has even trickled down to mainstream brands.
Paris Hilton recently picked up a bunch of All-Over Sequin 2x2 Tanks at Express, saving some for pre-jail nights on the town and others for a fashionable bike ride. The same day Paris shopped, Princess Sara Bint Mohammed Al-Saud of Saudi Arabia chose the same sparkly top to bring back home. At only $39.50, you needn't be royalty to add one to your own wardrobe.
Sequins not for you? Jump on the sparkly bandwagon with some signature bling. Just don't sell your house for a 20-carat rock. Costume jewelry is as trendy as ever, even with stars who can afford the real thing. But please don't pair these jewels with the sequined frocks and tops, unless you're trying to impersonate Diana Ross. One shimmery item can go a long way.
