Cusack Fan Maintains Stalking Innocence
Her behavior hasn't exactly supported her claims, but this John Cusack maintains her proximity to him was merely incidental.
Emily Diane Leatherman pleaded not guilty Wednesday to one count of felony stalking following her bust over the weekend near the High Fidelity star's Malibu home.
The 33-year-old, who has been on Cusack's personal "beware of" list since 2006, is also facing misdemeanor counts of violating a restraining order and petty theft, the latter stemming from a cabdriver's claim that she didn't pay her fare when he drove her out to the actor's neighborhood on Sunday, the reason why the cops were called in the first place.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office, Cusack flagged down the deputies himself and told them that, while he hadn't seen the woman on his property that day, he recognized her as the one who had shown "unusual interest" in him for 18 months.
Her alleged actions, which included throwing bags containing love letters, screwdrivers and rocks over his fence, prompted him to obtain a court order, good for three years, preventing Leatherman from coming within 500 feet of him in July 2006.
Leatherman, who maintained at the time that she only sent Cusack a total of two letters, was also arrested last year outside a Beverly Hills home belonging to Tom Cruise, who she had also allegedly made repeated attempts to contact.
Officials said that her current Cusack-related run-in with the law also involved a bag of something being thrown onto his property, but they declined to say what was in it.
If convicted on all counts, Leatherman stands to spend four years behind bars, with the stalking charge carrying a maximum sentence of three years in prison and each misdemeanor adding a possible six-month stretch.
She is currently jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail. A hearing on whether there's enough evidence against her to bring the case to trial is scheduled for April 14.
