Williams Divorce No Laughing Matter

Good help may be hard to find—good spouses are apparently even harder.

Robin Williams' wife of nearly 19 years, and the former nanny of his kids with wife No. 1, has filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.

The Oscar winner's publicist, Mara Buxbaum, confirmed to E! News that Marsha Garces Williams lodged the petition in San Francisco Superior Court last Friday.

Calls to Marsha’s attorney, Robert Kaufman, have not been returned.

Robin, 56, and Marsha, 51, married in April 1989 and have two children together, daughter Zelda, born in 1989, and son Cody, born in 1991.

According to the petition obtained by E! News, the couple separated on New Year’s Eve. Marsha is seeking sole physical custody of Cody, with Robin being permitted visitation rights. (View divorce petition.)

The couple's partnership was both business and pleasure, as the duo founded Blue Wolf Productions in 1991 together, which had a hand in many of Williams' big-screen outings, including Patch Adams, Mrs. Doubtfire and Jakob the Liar.

Marsha originally held down nanny duties for Williams' oldest son, Zachary, who was born in 1983 to the comic and his previous wife, Valerie Velardi, to whom he was married for 10 years. Marsha was later upgraded to his personal assistant and then to the new Mrs. Williams.

While neither side is commenting on what may be behind the irreconcilable differences, Williams has not been shy about his personal demons. In 2006, he announced that after 20 years of sobriety he had "found himself drinking again" and checked into an Oregon rehab clinic.

NBC recently announced that Williams would make a rare TV guest appearance on the 200th episode of Law & Order: SVU, scheduled to air April 29.
