Fox Jettisons Jezebel James

In the end, low ratings and lack of patience were the sins that did Jezebel in: Fox has pulled the plug on The Return of Jezebel James after just three episodes.

The comedy came with a stellar pedigree—masterminded by Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and starring indie queen Parker Posey and Six Feet Under alum Lauren Ambrose—a plum, post-American Idol time slot and a network order of 13 episodes.

But things went downhill from the get-go. Last October, Fox execs, apparently disappointed by the pilot, cut the episode count from 13 to seven and moved the show from its Wednesday time slot to the ratings wasteland that is Friday-night programming.

Jezebel James finally debuted with back-to-back episodes March 14, and was largely panned by critics and ignored by viewers—averaging just 3.2 million sets of eyeballs. The third laugh-track-laden episode did equally horribly last Friday, hence the yanking.

The series revolved around a pair of polar-opposite sisters who live together after the free-spirited one (Ambrose) agrees to act as a surrogate to the professional, infertile one (Posey). The show's title referred to a fictional children's book series written by Posey's character about her sister's imaginary childhood friend, Jezebel James.

Fox will not air any of the remaining episodes, instead filling the Friday slot with reruns of Bones.
