Kirstie Right Up Harpo's Alley
Oprah Winfrey just gave big to Kirstie Alley.
The Scientolostar, no stranger to emotionally and physically baring all on Winfrey's stage in the past, has signed a TV development deal with the talk-show queen's Harpo Productions.
While no specific shows have yet been announced as a result of the deal, it's possible an Alley-led daily talk show could result from the partnership, particularly in the wake of the actress' recent string of successful appearances on Winfrey's chatfest.
It's unclear, however, whether that or any other Alley-featuring show would go into syndication or air on Winfrey's soon-to-debut OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, which launches in 2009.
Over the past few years, Alley has commandeered a fair share of Winfrey's airtime, allowing designer-turned-host—not to mention longtime housewife favorite—Nate Berkus to redo her kitchen, divulging details of her past drug and weight problems and, most famously, donning a bikini to show off her post-Jenny Craig body.
"I'm very open with what I've been through in my own personal life, and nothing—I mean nothing—is off-limits for me to talk about," Alley said.
"Nothing shocks me. I'm a great listener. I'm a good comedian. And I won't lie—I live a beautiful life; so I hope to bring those elements together to offer something totally fresh for the television audience."
Harpo's brass is equally enthusiastic about Alley's potential at the company.
"Kirstie is a tremendous talent who is incredibly relatable and a true fan favorite. And we are thrilled to welcome her to Harpo," president Tim Bennett said. "Audiences love her and it's easy to see why: She is always at ease, whether speaking up about the most intimate aspects of her life or even appearing in a bikini on the Oprah show."
"We are working forward to working together to bring viewers everywhere her distinctive voice and comedic flair."
