Robin Williams on the Down-L&O
Robin Williams is getting the "especially heinous" ripped-from-the-headlines treatment.
The Oscar winner is set to guest star on the 200th episode of Law & Order: SVU, playing an engineer who, having suffered through a life-changing tragedy, has developed a deep distrust of authority and feels compelled to inform others about the dangers in "leading unquestioning lives," per NBC.
"We are thrilled that one of the most talented and versatile actors around will be starring in this powerful and complex special 200th episode," series executive producer Neal Baer said Tuesday. "We can't imagine anyone else doing this role."
Williams follows in the footsteps of fellow funnymen such as Martin Short, Bob Saget and Jerry Lewis who have also used guest spots on SVU to explore the dark side. Incidentally, all three of those actors played individuals who were in serious need of some law and order.
And despite his nonpareil comedic credentials, Williams has proven that he can do creepy in films like One Hour Photo and Insomnia. Additionally, it was his serious, albeit warm and fuzzy, turn in Good Will Hunting that won him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1998.
To TVGuide.com, Baer described Williams' episode, "Authority," as "one of the best cat and mouse stories we've ever done." It's scheduled to air April 29.
Williams, 56, last graced the small screen—playing a character other than himself—in 2003, when he guest-starred on Bonnie Hunt's short-lived sitcom Life with Bonnie.
According to IMDb.com, the Mrs. Doubtfire star's first-ever TV appearance came on a 1977 episode of Laugh-In, about a year before he nanu-nanu'd his way into sitcom history on Mork & Mindy.
Law & Order: SVU, now in its ninth season, is the most-watched installment of creator Dick Wolf's procedural universe. Before the writers' strike put an end to new episodes after Jan. 22, the show was averaging 12.6 million viewers a week for NBC.
