The Game Courted for Schoolyard Fight

UPDATE: A judge set a trial date of Jan. 19, 2010, for Shannon Rodrick's suit against The Game, although she also ordered the two sides to give mediation a try in hopes of reaching a settlement beforehand.

The Game had been facing a possible default judgment because he failed to file a response to Rodrick's complaint for nearly a year. When his camp finally responded, he denied the allegations.

The Long Beach man who claims he was on the receiving end of a schoolyard smackdown last year has sued the rapper for assault and battery, civil rights violation and negligence.

The lawsuit stems from the same Feb. 24, 2007, incident that led to The Game's no contest plea last month to possessing a firearm in a school zone during a pro-am basketball league game. Originally sentenced to 60 days in L.A. County jail, he was released Monday, due to chronic overcrowding, after only eight days behind bars.

But while the D.A.'s Office agreed to drop charges of brandishing a gun in the presence of a police officer and making criminal threats in exchange for The Game's plea, Shannon Rodrick, who was coaching the opposing team, believes the Doctor's Advocate MC still has to pay.

"This was an exciting game and each member was very competitive to win so that they would obtain bragging rights," states the complaint filed Thursday in L.A. Superior Court and obtained by TMZ. Rodrick's team, the Blazers, led the team the defendant was playing on, the Litem-Ups, by 16 points throughout the game.

Following a spate of trash-talking between the opposing teams, The Game, whose real name is Jayceon Taylor, "suckerpunched" Rodrick with a closed fist to his left cheek that sent him flailing backwards.

It was then that The Game went to his SUV and returned with a gun, the suit states.

"He noticed that Taylor was walking toward him with a gun and Taylor stated, 'I'm going to blast this fool,'" Rodrick contends, after which he ran into the learning center's gym and hid in the hallway until the hip-hopper had left the premises.

The verbal threats and the punch, which Rodrick alleges were inflicted "with malice and with the intent to kill," have left the plaintiff with injuries that required medical treatment and he continues to "lose earnings from employment."

As a direct result of the defendants' (including game sponsor City Hoops Nike Basketball and its president, Omar Bray) conduct, "plaintiff was injured in his health, strength and activity, sustaining injury to his body and shock and injury to his nervous system and person, all of which injuries have caused and continued to cause plaintiff great mental, physical and nervous pain and suffering and emotional distress," the suit contends.

Rodrick is seeking unspecified damages and attorneys' fees.

In addition to jail time, The Game, 29, was also sentenced to three years' probation and 150 hours of community service. His next album, L.A.X., is due out in June.
