Kathy's Life on the Wedding List
Kathy Griffin united two fans both in laughter and holy matrimony over the weekend.
The comedian served as minister at the wedding of Brian Anstey and Elka Shapiro in New York Saturday, after being ordained online by the Universal Life Church in order to do so.
Griffin said she was unable to resist the couple's request that she marry them.
"The request came in, and how could I say no?" she told the New York Daily News.
"I love that this couple just want to have fun," she added. "They're my kind of people."
In addition to obtaining her online certification as a minister, Griffin said she filled out the necessary paperwork to ensure the marriage would be legal in New York State.
By all accounts, Shapiro and Anstey were delighted with their unique choice of officiate.
"Neither of us is affiliated with any particular religion, and the major factor in our relationship is laughter," Shapiro told the Daily News. "Kathy was fantastic and had us all in hysterics during the ceremony.
"We are so lucky that she agreed to marry us because it's so unusual and something we'll always remember."
The 10-minute service reportedly included off-color jokes about the couple's sex life and at one point, Griffin had the bride recite the menu for the reception, much to the amusement of the 100 guests.
The nuptials were filmed for the fourth season of Griffin's Bravo show, My Life on the D-List, and will be featured in an episode slated to air in June.
