Bai Ling Pays Up
Bai Ling has fessed up.
The actress pleaded guilty Wednesday to disturbing the peace, stemming from her arrest last month at Los Angeles International Airport for swiping batteries and two magazines from a gift shop.
Ling, who blamed a bad breakup for the behavior that led to her Feb. 13 shoplifting bust, was ordered to pay a $200 fine, plus additional unspecified penalties adding up to about $700, L.A. City Attorney's Office spokesman Frank Mateljan told E! News.
While not an earth-shattering penalty, the sum far exceeds the $16 worth of goods Ling tried to walk out of the shop with before a store employee stopped her and called security.
Police took the Red Corner star into custody at nearby Pacific Station, where she was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor shoplifting and released on her own recognizance. (For those keeping track at home, Ling, who is listed as 37 years old on her Wikipedia and IMDb bios, was aged to 41 on her official booking sheet.)
She was originally charged with petty theft, also an infraction, but her attorney bargained with the City Attorney's Office, possibly due to immigration regulations, to change the charge to disturbing the peace.
Ling wrote on her blog Monday: "I just got the good news and I am relieved that the prosecutor has decided not to file misdemeanor charges against me and to treat this matter as an infraction. What happened was an innocent mistake on my part and I am confident that the truth will be told since I never had any intention of taking items without paying for them.
"I appreciate the support of the public and especially my friends and my fans. Thank you!"
The prominent party fixture's website was also the recipient of some more philosophical posts the day of her arrest, musings that apparently were connected to the sting of her recent split.
"Again flying to the cold snow...but looking forward to the work and wild nature, my heart is a little sad now, casted by the melody of life," she wrote at 4:39 p.m. on Feb. 13.
Ling was on her way to New Mexico to work on the Taylor Hackford film Love Ranch, in which she plays one of the working girls at a Nevada brothel.
