Miss USA Hits Vegas, Baby

Miss USA is no stranger to some bad behavior (see 2006 winner Tara Conner), so we're not exactly shocked the beauty contest is moving to Sin City.

The 57th Annual Miss USA Pageant is putting its stilettos down at the brand new Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip and NBC will air the competition live on Apr. 11, organizers announced Friday.

"What happens in Vegas won't be staying in Vegas as the Miss USA telecast is viewed in more than 80 countries around the globe on live television," Paula M. Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization, said in a statement.

The move comes just a week after the contest's older rival, the Miss America Pageant, was held in the same Planet Hollywood resort.

Miss Universe produces both the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants, all of which are jointly owned by Donald Trump and the Peacock network.

Strutting their stuff—whether in evening gowns or swimsuits—will be 51 lovelies each representing the 50 states, plus Washington, D.C.The current Miss USA, Rachel Smith of Tennessee, took the tiara last during a ceremony in Los Angeles.Perhaps the change of scenery will do for Miss USA what it did for Miss America.

Hoping to spark viewer interest, the grandmother of all pageants left its 85-year-old home in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Last Saturday, Miss Michigan Kirsten Haglund reigned.

For the first time in four years, the remade pageant saw ratings go up—it averaged 3.6 million in its TLC premiere, compared to 2.4 million on CMT last year. The performance was the show's best since being banished to cable in 2006.
