Pleshette's Star Still Shining in Hollywood
As the singular phenomenon known as awards season regularly proves, Hollywood loves to honor its favorite sons and daughters, even if only in spirit.
In turn, Suzanne Pleshette's induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame is still on for Jan. 31, what would have been the actress' 71st birthday.
While posthumous honors are regularly given to celebrities and prominent entertainment industry figures, Pleshette had already been tapped to receive a star on Tinseltown's iconic Hollywood Boulevard before she died. Otherwise, there is a five-year waiting period to nominate a deceased individual.
The throaty-voiced stage and screen luminary had requested that her panel be located in front of the lingerie store Frederick's of Hollywood, which is further east than the plot of land that's home to most of the newer stars.
A rep for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which approves the Walk of Fame Committee's selections, could not immediately be reached for comment. It's unclear for which of Pleshette's credits—television, film or theater—she is being honored.
The Bob Newhart Show star lost her battle with lung cancer on Saturday, leaving a horde of admiring fans and colleagues in her wake.
Longtime friend Tina Sinatra will appear next Thursday to accept the star on Pleshette's behalf. Former costars Bob Newhart and Marcia Wallace are expected to speak.
Pleshestte and Newhart reunited for the 1990 finale of his second eponymous sitcom, a successful twist on the "it was all a dream" way of ending a series that was so bungled by Dallas and St. Elsewhere.
"To be together again with the old rhythms, looking into each other's eyes, was just wonderful," Pleshette told CBS This Morning at the time. It was "very touching and so dear" that the studio audience "remembered us with such affection," she said.
Pleshette's second husband, Newhart regular Tom Poston, died last April at 85.
