Brendan Fraser Cuts Marital Ties
Hollywood can't always guarantee that happy ending.
Brendan Fraser and his wife Afton are splitting up after nine years of marriage, the actor's rep confirmed to E! News Thursday.
"They continue to maintain a close and caring friendship," publicist Ina Treciokas said.
The duo have three children, Griffin, 5; Holden, 3; and Leland, 1 ½.
Fraser and Afton Smith tied the knot Sept. 27, 1998, at the Bel Air Hotel in Los Angeles. The longtime sweethearts dated for about four years beforehand.
Fraser, 39, who played an embattled district attorney in the 2005 Oscar winner Crash, returns to the big screen Jan. 25 as a gangster in the ensemble crime drama The Air I Breathe, costarring Kevin Bacon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Forest Whitaker and Emile Hirsch.
One of People's 50 Most Beautiful in 1998, Fraser has also signed on to lend his voice and visage to Journey 3-D, what promises to at least be a technologically superior take on the sci-fi classic Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Fraser, whose roles have ranged from The Quiet American to Dudley Do-Right, tends to be cast as one or the other—either a handsome brooding type or a cartoonish adventurer, as evidenced by many of his credits. They include The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, Gods and Monsters, Monkeybone, George of the Jungle, Airheads, With Honors and School Ties.
