Amy Winehouse to Jailhouse?
Sure it may not be the most promising way to wind down the year, but on the bright side for Amy Winehouse, there's nowhere to go in 2008 but up.
The trouble-plagued "Rehab" singer was arrested "by appointment" Monday in London, in connection with the witness-tampering case that has already resulted in the jailing of her hubby, Blake Fielder-Civil.
In Winehouse's case, the arrest was a formality to bring the 24-year-old performer in for questioning . Upon arriving at the police station, which she did voluntary, the Back to Black belter was fingerprinted and provided a DNA sample, courtesy of a saliva swab, to police.
"A 24-year-old woman has been arrested by appointment at an East London police station," Scotland Yard said in a statement Tuesday. "She is currently in custody. The arrest was made in connection with an investigation into perverting the course of justice."
Per British law, police did not name Winehouse as the suspect in custody, because she has not yet been charged with any offenses.
Winehouse has since been released and is due back for more questioning in early March.
According to British media reports, police were primarily interested in grilling the six-time Grammy nominee about her finances.
The 25-year-old Fielder-Civil was arrested last month on similar charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice (aka witness-tampering) and causing grievous bodily harm (aka assault) to pub owner James King, a count stemming from a June incident in London.
Fielder-Civil and five other men were arrested following a police raid on the couple's home last month. The raid came after Fielder-Civil and cohorts allegedly attempted to bribe King with roughly $400,000 to recant his assault claim and thereby avoid a made-for-the-tabloids trial.
That little scheme backfired.
Fielder-Civil has been remanded to custody until Jan. 18.
Investigators have stated that they don't believe Winehouse was aware of any bribery plot, but they were apparently keen to determine how Fielder-Civil, a self-described music video worker, may have come up with the hefty sum.
Three weeks ago, shortly after Fielder-Civil was taken into custody, Winehouse canceled all tour dates and promotional appearances through the end of the year. A press release from her publicist cited doctor's orders and health issues as the reason for the pull-out.
In a separate statement, however, Winehouse blamed her husband's legal woes for her inability to go on with the shows.
"I can't give it my all onstage without my Blake," she said at the time. "My husband is everything to me, and without him, it's just not the same."
