Karate Kid Baddie Sentenced
Getting his butt kicked by Ralph Macchio was nothing compared to the thumping Sean Kanan got in court.
Kanan, best known for squaring off against Ralph Macchio in Karate Kid, Part III, was sentenced Thursday to five years of probation and 18 months of alcohol-education classes after copping to a drunk-driving charge, according to the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office.
The 41-year-old actor, whose credits also include stints on General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful, was taken into custody about 3:45 a.m. on Aug. 18 after police pulled him over on suspicion of drunken driving.
He was booked on one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and one misdemeanor charge of driving with a blood-alcohol content of 0.08 percent or higher. Kanan, previously convicted of a DUI in 1998, initially pleaded not guilty to the new counts.
On Thursday, he switched to a no contest plea to the latter charge. In exchange, prosecutors dropped the DUI count.
Because he is a two-time offender, Kanan was also sentenced to four days in jail. But Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Spurgeon Smith stayed the lockup time pending the actor's successful completion of the rest of his terms. Aside from probation and alcohol-ed program, Kanan was fined $1,944.
Kanan, who was not required to be in court, entered the plea through his lawyer.
