New Hero to Be Birthed Online
Heroes' next hero is in your hands.
Two weeks after confirming that production on the six-episode spinoff Heroes: Origins was halted indefinitely, NBC has come up with an alternative way to introduce yet another new genetic mutation into the hit series' existing lot.
On Monday, nbc.com's Heroes site launched a Create Your Hero feature, through which users can vote online for the attributes they'd most like to see in new male and female Heroes, from continent of origin to—eventually, one would think—superpower.
Like the comic-book serials Heroes resembles, Create Your Hero is being rolled out in installments, meaning that Week 1 only offers the categories Place of Birth, Appearance and Body Type—all mighty vague—to choose from.
Viewers will get to witness the new character's weekly evolution during commercial breaks, with the final unveiling sometime next year.
The concept behind Heroes: Origins was similar: Viewers were going to be able to vote online for their favorite new character, and that lucky man, woman or beast would appear on the Heroes mothership.
But now, fans can still put in their two cents—and the studio is going to save a bundle in production costs. Plus, it doesn't take a union scribe to pen the rules for an online contest.
The eagerly awaited Origins was yanked from NBC's midseason schedule in anticipation of the Industry-wide writers strike that officially kicked off Nov. 5, crippling productions on both coasts and leaving multiple spring premieres in doubt.
Production on Heroes has already shut down, and only 11 of 24 episodes will be completed, meaning there are three new chapters left—so not enough time to save New York yet again—before one of the colder winters in recent Hollywood memory sets in.
And prime-time drama hasn't been the only casualty to date. While Fox is eagerly anticipating its four-hour American Idol premiere extravaganza in January, NBC has become the first major network to pull out of the Television Critics Association winter press tour, which also kicks off in January.
