Beyoncé Tops New Vibes
The Vibe Awards might not have the same vibe as previous years, but some of the winners sure look familiar.
Beyoncé Knowles scored big at the 2007 edition of the ceremony, taking home R&B Artist of the Year and the VStyle prize for her fashion sense.
But the awards show, which, in its first four years, was a fixture on UPN and then on the CW, is decidedly lower in profile. Now on the little-seen VH1 Soul network and rechristened as VH1 Soul Presents: Vibe Awards Special, this year's show is a one-hour taped affair premiering Nov. 14. An encore will air on standard-issue VH1five days later.
The Vibe Awards never seemed to overcome the melee that marred the event three years ago; and faced with sinking ratings, the CW opted not to carry the awards this time around.
The ceremony, whose winners were announced this week, will still feature top names in R&B and hip-hop.
Aside from Knowles, rapper Lil' Wayne was named Hip Hop Artist of the Year, while Best Collaboration went to Fabolous featuring Ne-Yo on "Make Me Better."
Producer of the Year was a no-brainer, going to Timbaland. Rising R&B singer-songwriter Robin Thicke (son of Growing Pains dad Alan Thicke) earned Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
Beyoncé, who was nominated in four categories, saw her hit "Irreplaceable" beaten out for Song of the Year by "Buy U a Drink" by T-Pain featuring Yung Joe, while her "Get Me Bodied" clip lost out on Video of the Year to Rihanna's "Umbrella."
The B'day girl's longtime lover man, Jay-Z, also did pretty well, picking up the Vibe Props accolade.
And, perhaps making up for his diss at the MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West was recognized for Mixtape of the Year for his underground release, "Can't Tell Me Nothing."
Finally, Shop Boyz nabbed Ringtone of the Year for their anthem, "Party Like a Rockstar."
The new Vibes will be emceed by Eve and feature special appearances by the likes of Alicia Keys, Keyshia Coles, Wyclef Jeean, Dallas Austin, Nelly, Common, Snoop Dogg, Big Boi, Farnsworth Bentley, Q Tip and Rodney Jerkins.
Just as it was establishing itself as a key player on the kudos circuit, the Vibe Awards took a major hit when rapper Young Buck stabbed an ex-con named Jimmy Johnson after the latter sucker punched Dr. Dre at the November 2004 ceremony.
Johnson pleaded guilty to assault. Buck was originally charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon, but that count was dropped after authorities found a video that showed him brandishing a fork; the performer pleaded no contest to a lesser charge and received three years' probation.
