Emails Detail DeGeneres Doggy Drama

Ellen DeGeneres may no longer be talking about Iggy, but that doesn't mean Poochgate is going away quietly.

A round of emails detailing the doggy dilemma between the talk-show host's partner, Portia de Rossi, and the owner of the Mutts & Moms dog rescue, made their way online Thursday, providing more insight into the headline-hijacking tale of canine woe.

The series of emails, posted by the Smoking Gun, kicked off Sept. 11, when de Rossi sent a glowing email to Marina Baktis, the Mutts & Moms adoption rep, about how Iggy had already ingratiated himself to the family.

"He was amazing today," de Rossi wrote. "He met all the cats (properly, this time) and and then when I let him off the leash, he didn't go back to them at all...He was incredible...We can't wait to get him to the new house."

A month later, however, things turned sour. On Oct. 12, Batkis sent an email to the couple "hoping to get an update on Iggy," including whether he had yet been neutered and whether he was still getting along with the duo's cats and other dog, Wolf.

In a response dated the following day, de Rossi broke the news that the adoption had not worked out as planned and that they had instead given Iggy to DeGeneres' hairstylist, who had "really bonded" with the pup.

"Well, we tried Iggy—adored him, neutered him and was working with a trainer. He was just too much energy and time for us in our brand new home with so much going on in our lives," read the note signed by both women. "As time went by, and because of [DeGeneres' hairstylist's] persistence in asking-begging-for him we decided that he'd have a much better home with Cheryl [Marks, the stylist].

"I hope you trust that we've done the right thing for him and that we gave it much thought. We miss him like crazy-he is brilliant...truly amazing little puppy...and we would never have let him go to anyone we weren't sure would give him a wonderful home."

But Batkis wasn't so sure, issuing a swift response in which she said she was "deeply disturbed that you gave Iggy away without my knowledge or permission, and in violation of our legally binding contract."

"This is a betrayal of my trust, even though I am sure you believe Iggy will be in good hands...This is our policy and it is what you agreed to do when you signed our Adoption Agreement...I trust that you understand that returning Iggy as soon as possible is the right thing to do."

The following day, de Rossi responded that the request to return Iggy was "truly heartbreaking to many people," and was followed up by an email from Marks.

"We have had Iggy for 2 weeks and is now bonded and loved by our family," Marks wrote to Batkis. "I met Iggy at Ellen's house a few times when she realized that Wolf was Not bonding to Iggy...she knew we wanted a puppy and I was already crazy about him."

Marks also told Batkis that she "would be happy to answer any question or fill out any applications."

Batkis, for her part, said Marks was more than welcome to do so—but only after returning Iggy to the shelter and "not without our process being followed."

"We do not adopt dogs to people we have not met," Batkis wrote in an email dated Oct. 14. "I understand that you like Iggy, he's great little pup but the way things were done was wrong. This is not your fault or mine. Portia signed a legal, binding contract that if she could not keep Iggy that he would be returned to rescue.

"She violated the contract she signed and broke our trust."

The email chain stops there, but the following day DeGeneres taped a teary episode of her show recounting how, shortly after receiving the final email from Batkis, reps from the shelter commandeered the dog from the Marks' home.

DeGeneres addressed the sob-inducing saga later in the week, after Batkis filed a police report saying she had been threatened with violence and again when word broke that Iggy had been given to another adoptive home. At that point, DeGeneres vowed not to speak of the situation again, unless Iggy was reunited with the Marks family.

So taxing was the week of onscreen breakdowns that DeGeneres cut short her taping schedule, opting to air reruns on Thursday and Friday. She returned to the set Monday making light of her headline-grabbing antics.

While the situation may have been wearing on her personal life, it did nothing but benefit her professional one.

Preliminary Nielsen figures for the two tear-filled shows indicated a ratings boost of more than 10 percent.

Meanwhile, DeGeneres spokesperson Kelly Bush also denied to E! News reports that she and de Rossi have split up or that troubles at home preceded the talk show host's doggy-related meltdown.

"If you believe these 'reliable sources,' Ellen and Portia have also had several weddings, adopted a baby AND are pregnant."
