O.J. Codefendants Cop

With friends—or, at least, alleged accomplices—like these, who needs enemies?

Two of O.J. Simpson's codefendants in the former Naked Gun star's Las Vegas armed robbery case pleaded guilty Tuesday to lesser charges, a week after reaching separate deals with prosecutors to testify against their supposed ringleader.

Walter Alexander, a 46-year-old real-estate salesman and former Simpson golfing buddy hailing from Mesa, Arizona, was rung up for a felony count of conspiracy to commit robbery.

Moments later, Charles Cashmore, a 40-year-old Las Vegas bartender and sometime deejay, copped to felony accessory to robbery.

Clark County District Attorney David Roger in turn dropped the more serious charges of kidnapping, armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy against the duo, who are hoping to escape jail time in return for their cooperation implicating Simpson as the mastermind.

While Alexander technically faces up to six years in prison and Cashmore, five, the DA has confirmed he will seek suspended sentences and probation for both men.

After Tuesday's arraignment hearings, Clark County Court Judge Kevin Williams ordered Cashmore released from house arrest. He and Alexander will remain free until their sentencing next spring.

Simpson, 60, is accused of leading a posse that included Alexander, Cashmore and three other men into a suite at the Palace Station Hotel and Casino on Sept. 13. The purpose of the raid: to reclaim sports collectibles, worth a reputed $80,000, that Simpson felt belonged to him.

Officials felt differently and initially charged Simpson with multiple felony counts, including two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, burglary with a firearm, two counts of first-degree kidnapping with a deadly weapon, coercion with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit kidnapping and conspiracy to commit robbery. He was also hit with gross misdemeanor charge of conspiracy to commit a crime.

Simpson's other alleged accomplices—Clarence Stewart, Michael McClinton and Charles Ehrlich—each face nine similar felony counts and one gross misdemeanor.

Roger is due to file an amended complaint Wednesday that  includes a second felony charge of coercion against Simpson and two new coercion charges each against the other three.  (View the amended complaint.)

If convicted of all charges, the defendants would face up to life in prison.

Simpson's Las Vegas attorney, Gabriel Grasso, expressed surprise about the plea agreement and suggested the prosecution was willing to cut the other defendants serious slack to build a nonexistent case against Simpson.

"These guys are basically pleading guilty to offenses they didn't commit," Grasso told E! Online. "That's sort of shocking to me...because I can guarantee you that none of these guys was walking into that room to commit a robbery."

Grasso also suggested that prosecutor Roger completely rewrote the case against Simpson in the amended complaint.

Edward Miley, a lawyer for Cashmore, told reporters after the proceeding that his client was "anxious to get his story out there," noting Cashmore was merely a bit player who helped haul boxes out of the hotel room for Simpson.

Alexander, who came to court equipped with a Bible, told reporters he felt  "at peace" with his decision to plead guilty and aid prosecutors.

"I'm not here to help or hurt O.J. Simpson," he said. "I'm only here to tell the truth."

Prosecutors hope testimony by Alexander and Cashmore will help prove Simpson intended to steal the collectibles—if necessary at the barrel of a gun. Alexander told detectives Simpson wanted his entourage to carry weapons with them in the hotel raid.

An attorney for Alexander, Robert Dennis Rentzer, declined to divulge the nature of his client's testimony.

Simspon was acquitted in 1995 of murdering ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, but lost a wrongful-death civil suit a year later.

A preliminary hearing in the case is set for Nov. 8-9.
