Sean Stewart Maintains Brick-Tossing Innocence
Sean Stewart isn't rolling over anytime soon, not to cop a plea or, apparently, to beat the L.A. traffic.
Arriving 25 minutes late for his arraignment, Rod Stewart's 27-year-old son pleaded not guilty Thursday to felony assault and vandalism charges in connection with his June arrest for allegedly tossing a brick at a couple after being denied entrance to a party in the Hollywood Hills.
His claim of innocence was duly noted and the judge warned Stewart to pay closer attention to the big hand on the clock.
"People have to come to court on time," Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen A. Marcus told Stewart. "I'm not waiting for defendants."
Stewart learned last month that he would have to stand trial on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count each of throwing a substance at a vehicle and vandalism with over $400 damage after Judge Julius M. Title ruled there was sufficient evidence to proceed.
A pretrial hearing is set for Nov. 26.
Stewart is accused of attacking West Hollywood residents Ericka and Tobalus Stein on Apr. 22 when the pair motored past the rock-and-roll scion and his entourage in their pickup truck at about 4 a.m.
According to a civil lawsuit filed by the Steins in May, Stewart and his pals launched an unprovoked attack on their vehicle, "swinging their arms at, punching, throwing bricks and other items" at them and striking the bodies of plaintiffs as well as striking the [truck]."
Ericka Stein testified last month that she suffered a bruise on her chest and cuts on her back when Stewart heaved a brick at their truck, prompting her husband to toss a brick back at the group in an effort to drive them away.
Two defense witnesses said, meanwhile, that they were sitting in a Rolls Royce Phantom with Stewart when the so-called attack occurred, and that the Sons of Hollywood star only got out of the luxury car to confront the Steins when a brick hit its windshield.
Stewart, who's currently free on $60,000 bail, could face jail time if convicted.
