Winehouse Winds Up for Woodies
When it comes to the ever-erratic Amy Winehouse, sometimes it's better late then never.
The "Rehab" singer has agreed to perform her first gig in the U.S. since nixing a string of high-profile events and a Stateside tour earlier this summer while dealing with "health issues," signing on to headline the 2007 mtvU Woodie Awards in New York next month.
The booking is much more low-key than her scuttled MTV VMA performance. The Woodie Awards, in just its fourth year of existence, honors acts chosen by college students. The show is only open to card-carrying coeds.
If all goes as planned, Winehouse will lead a bill that includes The Academy Is... and Spank Rock.
In August, Winhouse essentially cleared out her calendar through September, backing out of all U.S. tour dates, as well as appearances on several TV shows, including the VMAs and Saturday Night Live.
She spent most of her time off in tabloid headlines, racking up column inches with tales of two daylong stints in rehab, calls from her in-laws for a ban on her records and photographs of her and husband Blake Fielder-Civil scratched and bloodied.
The 24-year-old has eased back into the performance circuit with a handful of appearances in Europe, including ill-received renditions of "Tears Dry on Their Own" and "Me and Mr. Jones" at the MOBO Awards last month, where she took home the top prize of Best U.K. Female. Critics claimed Winehouse appeared shaky on stage and mumbled through the lyrics, seeming to forget substantial parts of the latter tune.
The Woodies will take place at the Roseland Ballroom Nov. 8. Fans and rubberneckers can judge for themselves, as all the event's performances will simultaneously air on mtvU and stream on mtvU.com on Nov. 15. MTV will also air highlights from the event later in the week.
Meanwhile, Winehouse is also priming up to begin recording her Back to Black follow-up with producer Mark Ronson, who told MTV UK the duo would return to the studio sometime in November.
