McCartney, Mills Try to Work It Out
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills came together in court Thursday to continue the business of splitting up.
The former couple arrived at a London courthouse separately for a hearing that was reportedly focused on determining the amount of Mills' divorce settlement, which has been pegged at anywhere from $40 million to $100 million.
Mills' bodyguards held up a blanket to shield her as she exited her car, in an attempt to prevent photographers from snapping her picture.
One of her assistants later carried a wheelchair into the building for the former model, who lost a leg in a 1993 motorcycle accident.
McCartney appeared on the scene a few minutes later, dressed in a sober gray suit. Both halves of the estranged duo reportedly entered the courthouse via a private back entrance.
Proceedings were closed to the public, with chairs blocking the entry to the courtroom and a spy hole in the door blacked out to ward off prying eyes.
McCartney, 65, has reportedly offered his 39-year-old ex somewhere in the neighborhood of $40 million, but she is said to be holding out for closer to $100 million of his fortune, which is estimated at $1.5 billion.
Because the two had no prenuptial agreement in place at the time of their 2002 wedding, divorce specialists have predicted the former Beatle could wind up shelling out as much as $120 million, plus annual support payments for the couple's daughter, Beatrice, who turns four next month.
Should Mills succeed in getting her demands met, the divorce could wind up as the costliest in British history.
The estranged twosome announced their separation in May 2006, and McCartney filed for divorce one month later, citing Mills' "unreasonable behavior."
