House Secures a Staff

The names have changed, but the story remains the same.

Kal Penn, Olivia Wilde and Peter Jacobson have signed on as House regulars, meaning 6-turned-9, 13 and 20-something had the right stuff, as far as Hugh Laurie's acerbically blunt and brilliant diagnostician was concerned.

Or, as Dr. Wilson would surmise, House liked them the least.

Season four of Fox's hit medical drama began with House being coerced into hiring a new staff to replace the departed—yet still present—Foreman (Omar Epps), Chase (Jesse Spencer) and Cameron (Jennifer Morrison), a challenge he eventually welcomed as yet another way in which to annoy Cuddy. So, he started by putting 40 largely faceless newbies through their paces instead of the sanctioned three, and the livesaving ensued from there.

Dishing to Entertainment Weekly about his character, Lawrence Kutner, who was originally fired (not for setting a patient on fire but for tattling) but didn't take no for an answer, Penn said his alter ego is "a fan of trying random methods of exploration and lifesaving."

As for himself, Penn said he already feels like a tenured doc.

"When you start out on a show, nerves can run high, but with House, everyone was so welcoming I felt like part of the family," the star of the upcoming Harold & Kumar 2 said. "Psyched does not even begin to describe it. Awesomeness and thankfulness probably."

Wilde, formerly of The O.C. and the blink-and-you'll-miss-'em dramas Skin and The Black Donnellys, was content to remain "13" for as long as the job interview lasted. Her coolly collected, play-to-win persona—not to mention her looks—obviously appeal to her new boss.

And Jacobson's character, plastic surgeon Taub, definitely enhanced, so to speak, his credibility on Tuesday's episode by suggesting he give a patient breast implants to work the team's way around her opposition to exploratory surgery.

But just how House arrives at his decision is still unknown, even to him. The script for the hiring episode is being passed out this week, according to the Hollywood Reporter, proving that it takes a lot longer to pen nuanced, Emmy-worthy dialogue than it takes to draw up a contract.

Producers were originally planning to hire two new players full-time but instead decided on three.

In the meantime, next Tuesday two teams of five—men versus women—compete to diagnose the ailment of a wheelchair-bound man while House tempts death in his quest to find out what comes after the bright white light.
