Nicole Richie Gets Schooled in DUI Don'ts
Nicole Richie is a woman of her word. Particularly when that word is mandated by the Los Angeles legal system.
The pregnant starlet is making good on yet another of the terms of her sentence stemming from her wrong-way-DUI bust, signing up for an 18-month alcohol-education course to dissuade her from making the same mistake twice...or as it is, three times. (View confirmation of her enrollment)
The intensive course is for repeat offenders only; Richie boasted her first driving-under-the-influence offense back in June 2003. However, the program is above and beyond the call of duty for the former Simple Life star, as she was only ordered to complete 21 days of drug- and alcohol-education classes when she pleaded guilty to the charge earlier this year.
The 26-year-old filed papers with the Superior Court of California Wednesday indicating that she had enrolled in Santa Barbara's SB 38 Multiple Offender Drinking Driver Program. Richie had until Friday to notify the court of her enrollment.
The course consists of 52 hours of group counseling, biweekly face-to-face interviews with counselors and the completion of 12 hours of alcohol education. Attending 12-step meetings is encouraged but not required.
According to the Santa Barbara Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, the program hosts roughly 340 participants at any given time and will set Richie back $1,790, which she is required to pony up herself. Upon completion of the course, she will be eligible to get her driver's license reissued by the state DMV.
On July 27, she was sentenced to four days in jail, fined $2,048, ordered to complete a minimum three-week alcohol-education course and placed on three years' probation. The sentence stemmed from a Dec. 11 bust on a Los Angeles freeway, in which she was spotted driving the wrong way.
By the time cops arrived, she was parked in the HOV lane and had admitted to smoking pot and taking Vicodin earlier in the night. At the time, she had just departed from boyfriend Joel Madden's home.
On Aug. 24, she logged all of 82 minutes at the Century Regional Detention Facility before getting released.
Richie and Madden are expecting their first child at the end of the year.
