Kiefer Busted on DUI
There's nothing Jack Bauer can't handle. Kiefer Sutherland, on the other hand...
The 24 star was arrested for misdemeanor driving under the influence in the early-morning hours Tuesday, after failing a field sobriety test, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Sutherland was stopped at the corner of La Cienega and Beverly at 1:35 a.m., after officers spotted the Emmy winner making an illegal U-turn. After making the stop, the officers issued the actor a field sobriety test, which he failed.
"It would be premature to comment at this time," Sutherland's publicist, Evelyn Karamanos, said of the incident.
According to police, the Breathalyzer revealed the 40-year-old's blood-alcohol level to be more than twice the legal limit of 0.08, TMZ reported.
Earlier in the night, the actor, along with fellow network talent, was spotted at the Fox Fall Eco-Casino party, held at the nearby Area nightclub. 24 returns to the Fox schedule in January.
LAPD officers arrested the actor at the scene and transported him to the Hollywood police station, where he was formally booked on the misdemeanor charges at 4:09 a.m.
He was released at 5:42 a.m. after posting $25,000 bail, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Deparment Website. TMZ reported that authorities deemed Sutherland "cooperative and mellow" during the encounter.
The actor is due in court on Oct. 16.
The arrest marks Sutherland's second DUI in the past five years and fourth overall. He was also busted in September 2004 and pleaded no contest. He was sentenced to 60 months' probation, 50 hours of community service and an alcohol-treatment program.
The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office says Sutherland provided proof in March 2005 that he completed the community service and treatment.
But if he's found in violaiton of his probation, he would possibly face a fate similar to Paris Hilton.
And as a repeat offender, Sutherland would serve a mandatory minimum of five days in jail if convicted on the new charge.
In 1989, he was arrested for DUI and carrying a concealed and loaded weapon, though copped a deal with prosecutors to plead to a lesser charge of alcohol-related reckless driving.
His rap sheet got another unwelcome boost in 1993, when he was arrested for yet another DUI, but again plead down to alcohol-related reckless driving. He was also sentenced to perform 211 hours of community service.
As word of his more arrest spread, the nonprofit Los Angeles Police Foundation announced it would not have Sutherland introduce 24 producer Brian Grazer at a charity dinner this weekend. Sutherland remains on the guest; however, organizers weren't certain he'd be attending.
Meanwhile, despite its inauspicious beginning, the day wasn't a complete washout for Sutherland.
The Canadian-reared thesp received the Excellence Award from the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists in an afternoon reception at the Los Angeles home of the Consul General of Canada, Alain Dudoit. The event was closed to the press.
The prestigious honor is doled out only every two years to an ACTRA member working in L.A.
"We are honoring Mr. Sutherland's commitment to Canada and to Canadian performers," Richard Hardacre, ACTRA national president, said in a statement.
