Brit Attorney & Manager, K-Fed Assassins Call It Quits

First she loses an attorney, then her former bodyguard unloads some serious dirty laundry, then her manager dumps her, and to top it all off, reports of an assassination attempt on Kevin Federline's life turn out to be complete bunk? Things just keep getting worse and worse for Britney Spears.

Monday was a quadruple-whammy day for the struggling pop star, as a custody hearing at a Los Angeles courthouse nearly got derailed by sideshows.

Leading the way was Spears' former bodyguard Tony Barretto, the long-threatened secret witness represented by camera-friendly attorney Gloria Allred.

Outside the court, Allred announced her formidably sized client was present and ready for cross-examination by Spears' attorneys, having filed a formal declaration detailing alleged "drug use, nudity and safety issues" perpetrated by Spears in front of her children.

In a letter obtained by E! News, Allred claims Spears' behavior led Barretto to become "very concerned" about the welfare of her and Federline's sons—Sean Preston, who marked his second birthday on Friday, and Jayden James, who turned one last Wednesday. (Read the full letter.)

Barretto, 28, resided full-time at Spears' home during his tenure from March, just after she completed a stint in rehab, until May 17.

"He was terminated because he did not hear her when she asked him to pick up her hat," Allred said of her client's dismissal, adding that he opted to come forward now because "he is a father of young children himself."

"Though he was reluctant to come forward and become embroiled in her custody dispute, he decided to do so because of his concern about the safety and well-being of the children," said Allred, who added that she had contacted the Los Angeles County Counsel's Office, which represents Child Protective Services, about Baretto's claims.

Spears' attorney, Laura Wasser, described Barretto as a "disgruntled former employee."

Potential sour grapes aside, Allred said that while she was "shocked" that Spears' attorneys  chose to neither cross-examine Barretto's declaration nor even have him take the stand, it simply meant his account of the oddball behavior remained "unrefuted and unchallenged."

Federline's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, weighed in posthearing on why he thinks his legal rivals opted not to press the witness.

"Sometimes lawyers don't like cross-examining somebody when they don't know what the extent of their answers will be," he told reporters.

Another potential reason: It's no longer their concern.

Wasser, who reportedly butted heads with Spears over their strategy, confirmed at court today that she would be stepping down as the singer's legal representation and that a new lawyer would be stepping in.

Guess that's one way to stop the madness.

Spears will now be fronted by Melvin Goldsman and Marci Levine, who successfully got custody for David Hasselhoff earlier this summer.

It wasn't the only shakeup to Team Britney. Manager Jeff Kwatinetz of the Firm dumped Spears as a client after just one month of repping her.

"It saddens us to confirm media reports that we have terminated our professional relationship with Britney Spears," the management company said.

"We believe Britney is enormously talented, and has made a terrific record. But current circumstances have prevented us from properly doing our job. We wish Britney the best."

Like Wasser, Kwatinetz reportedly had issues with Spears' decision making. The move comes just a week after Spears' Video Music Awards flameout.

Regardless, Spears' label, Jive Records, says the behind-the-scenes maneuvers won't affect her ballyhooed comeback album.

"The label does not comment on artist/management relations. We're gearing up for a Nov. 13 album release date," the label said.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were quick to debunk an Entertainment Tonight  "exclusive" claiming that authorities had been tracking down "legitimate leads" on a "contract hit" supposedly placed on Federline. The syndicated show also claimed the FBI had attempted several times to inform the "America's Most Hated" rapper of the would-be assassination.

"The department does not currently have an open investigation," said LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman.  "There was an investigation conducted in June, but there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegation, and the investigation was closed."

Laura Eimiller of the FBI said the agency received "non-specific, uncorroborated information" about a possible threat. She said the FBI referred the matter to the LAPD "out of an abudance of caution."

Federline, 29, and Spears, 25, currently share custody of Sean Preston and Jayden James. Citing his fears for the boys' welfare, Federline is seeking primary physical custody of the children.

Meanwhile, commissioner Scott Gordon is due to rule later Monday on whether the media can have access to some documents in the custody battle.
