Jacksons to Drug Rumors: Beat It
The Jackson Five are back—with a whole different lineup and a completely different mission.
Michael Jackson's mother and four of his brothers have teamed up to write an open letter to the media, decrying a recent onslaught of reports claiming the former King of Pop is battling an addiction to pills and booze. (Read the letter.)
Jacksons Katherine, Tito, Jackie, Marlon and Jermaine signed the missive, which urges the press to stop citing what they say are bogus sources feeding false and malicious information about the Gloved One's supposed drug dependency.
"People magazine has followed other publications in reporting untrue and inaccurate information about Michael Jackson and the Jackson family," the letter reads. "Of these widely reported rumors, what has become the most troubling and heinous is that my son, and our brother, Michael Jackson, is dependent on painkillers and alcohol."
The direct reference to the usually celeb-friendly magazine is curious. People has not recently published a story on any drug allegations relating to Michael or any of the Jackson clan, and it's unclear if one is reportedly in the works.
The family members also denied reports that they have either attempted intervention or ever "engaged in an effort to take over his business affairs" because of Jackson's purported personal demons.
"We categorically deny ever planning, participating in or having knowledge of any kind of intervention, whatsoever. We strongly believe that these 'sources' and others, no matter who they are, are making these defamatory, inaccurate, and untrue claims for monetary reasons.
"It is time for these unfair and hurtful rumors, for profit, to end."
While Team Jackson is keeping on top of the personal front, the "Thriller" singer's ever busy spokeswoman, Raymone K. Bain, is working rumor patrol in Michael's professional life.
Last week, station managers at Pittsburgh's 96.1 KISS-FM put a song called "Mamacita" into rotation—a cut they touted as Jackson's comeback single. The dance track contains segments of the song sung in Spanish and has already made the Internet rounds.
Bain, however, has called foul on the track, denying it's one of Jackson's, saying simply, "He has not released any music yet."
