Daily Show Hits Iraq
The fake news just got a little more real.
Eschewing the green-screened backdrops for a little while, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart has actually dispatched one of its correspondents to Mess O' Potamia.
The show's purported senior war correspondent/senior military analyst, Rob Riggle, went to Iraq last week where, as Comedy Central puts it, "he was embedded with the troops and learned just how hot 120 degrees really feels."
According to the network, Riggle, accompanied by Daily Show writer Kevin Bleyer and field producer Glenn Clements, filed a week's worth of special reports called "Operation Silent Thunder: The Daily Show in Iraq."
Aside from soaking up the sun, Riggle performed in several sketch comedy routines for the troops, as well the USO's Operation Feel the Heat tour.
Joining him on the trip was Saturday Night Live alum Horatio Sanz and comedians Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel.
Riggles may be a mock newsman, but he's the only Daily Show reporter to actually serve in the armed forces, having left the Marine Corps Reserve in 2001 as a major.
In the late '90s, he attended Defense Information School and dealt with real journalists as a public information officer. Riggle also saw action in Liberia, Kosovo and Afghanistan, earning 19 medals and ribbons, among them the Combat Action Ribbon.
In civilian life, Riggle got hooked on improv comedy and spent the 2004-05 television season as a featured player on SNL. He's also appeared on The Office and Arrested Development.
Riggle and his crew are scheduled to arrive back in the U.S. on Saturday and will report for Daily Show duty on Monday. His "Operation Silent Thunder" segments will run throughout next week.
