Winehouse Shuts Down Tour for "Health Issues"
Amy Winehouse may have said "no, no, no" to rehab in song, but that doesn't mean she can't take some time off to deal with what her rep calls "health issues."
One week after the retro-styled songbird checked into a London hospital for "severe exhaustion," and a day after photographers snapped her leaving a U.K. rehabilitation center in a helicopter, Winehouse has cleared her August calendar.
"Amy Winehouse is putting all her touring commitments for this month on hold until further notice in order to address her health issues," her publicist, Tracey Miller, said in a statement Thursday.
"Her family has requested that the media respect Amy's privacy at this time. There will be no further comment."
The "Rehab" performer and her husband of three months, Blake Fielder-Civil, 23, were photographed on Wednesday leaving the grounds of the Causeway center off the British coast near Essex. The paparazzi shots show the pair climbing aboard a helicopter. Shortly afterward, they were spotted entering their London home and then a private medical clinic.
No word on her current whereabouts.
Winehouse, 23, has never claimed to be the most upstanding citizen, referring to herself in interviews as a "violent drunk" and copping to having battled an eating disorder. She also took flak earlier this year for reportedly carving her husband's name into her arm with a piece of glass during a photo shoot for Spin magazine.
"I'm not in this to be a f--king role model," she told Spin. "I don't care about any of this, and I don't have much of an opinion of myself. I don't think people care about me.
"I write songs because I'm f--ked in the head and need to get something good out of something bad," added the singer, whose Back to Black has sold more than 1 million copies and has been a fixture on the U.S. charts for most of the summer.
The scuttling of the August shows comes after Winehouse called off several other concerts in recent weeks.
The singer's rep has steadfastly held that Winehouse's jammed touring schedule has been behind her recent health woes.
"The truth is she is exhausted and was treated for exhaustion, not a drug overdose, at a London hospital," Miller told E! News last week. "She was released from the hospital Wednesday [Aug. 8] and has been ordered to rest—which she is doing right now.
"The important thing for her right now is to get some uninterrupted rest."
While there's no word on whether Winehouse will reschedule the canceled shows, she is still on the roster of performers for the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas Sept. 9. Miller told E! News that Winehouse's monthlong U.S. tour, kicking off Sept. 12 in New York, "is still on schedule."
