Ellen DeGeneres a Really Big Host
Ellen DeGeneres is heading back to where it all began, give or take a few million people.
The award-winning talk-show host has been tapped to preside over the upcoming TBS variety special Ellen's Really Big Show, which will feature stand-up comedy, musical acts and DeGeneres' signature brand of giggle inducement.
"I'm very happy to be working with TBS," the former sitcom star, who started out in show business as a comic, said in a statement. "I usually put two TBS of sugar in my coffee every day, so this is a dream come true for me."
The two-hour show, to be culled from footage shot during the HBO Comedy Festival taking place Nov. 14-17 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, airs Nov. 18 on TBS. The Time Warner-owned cable network is the festival's title sponsor.
"We are truly thrilled to be working with the enormously talented Ellen DeGeneres on her first TBS special," Michael Wright, senior VP of TBS, TNT and TCM's Content Creation Group, said. "It's especially exciting to see her bring back the variety-special format, which for decades provided television with some of its most memorable performances."
Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock are among the confirmed performers for the typically star-studded HBO event, which in the past has included appearances by Dave Chappelle, Jon Stewart, Dane Cook, Bill Maher, Sarah Silverman and Carlos Mencia.
HBO and producer AEG Live presented the first Comedy Festival in 2005.
Earlier this year, after hosting the 79th Annual Academy Awards, DeGeneres pocketed her third consecutive Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host, and her eponymous chatfest made off with its fourth statue for Outstanding Talk Show.
Her well-received showing at the Oscars has also earned her a Primetime Emmy nod for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program. Fox is airing the 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards live from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium on Sept. 16.
The Ellen DeGeneres Show's fifth season kicks off Sept. 4, and the syndicated crowd-pleaser has already been renewed through 2009-10.
