Justin, Beyoncé Top VMA Pack
What happens in Vegas...was just foreshadowed in New York.
•Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé Knowles scored a leading seven nominations apiece for the Sin City-bound 2007 MTV Video Music Awards, including dueling Best Video nods for "What Goes Around..." and "Irreplaceable," respectively. The nominations were revealed during a special broadcast of Total Request Live Tuesday.
For the first time ever, the ceremony will broadcast live from Las Vegas' Palms Casino Resort, and if nothing else, it promises to be a busy night for Timberlake. Not only is he scheduled to perform at the event, but he's teaming up with go-to producer and "SexyBack" collaborator Timbaland to host one of several Fantasy Suite parties at the hotel, parts of which will be featured during the show.
Should the smooth singer manage to make it up to the podium, he might owe even more of a debt of gratitude to MTV, as three of his nominations came from brand-spanking-new categories.
Timberlake snagged nods for Male Artist of the Year, Most Earthshattering Collaboration (for his Timbaland-assisted "SexyBack") and Quadruple Threat of the Year, honoring overachievers whose talent extends beyond music to some combination of fashion, business, philanthropy, acting and/or dancing.
In that category he's up against fellow multihyphenate heavyweights Bono, Kanye West and the reigning power couple of Knowles and Jay-Z.
Knowles also prospered from the influx of new categories, joining Timberlake in the Most Earthshattering Collaboration class, thanks to her and Shakira's "Beautiful Liar," as well as earning a nod for Female Artist of the Year.
Kanye West and Rihanna both racked up five nods, including Video of the Year nominations for both "Stronger" and "Umbrella."
Rounding out the night's top category is "Rehab" from Amy Winehouse, who tallied three nods, and the most surprising nominee, "D.A.N.C.E.," from French electro duo Justice.
Don't count out Justice—just ask West. The tempestuous rapper lost out to the top prize at last year's MTV Europe Awards to the French duo's "We Are Your Friends." The defeat didn't stop West from storming the podium and declaring that, having paid $1 million for his "Touch the Sky" video, he should have won, a spiel he continued backstage at the awards.
Barring a West meltdown, there should be plenty else to keep up the entertainment factor.
In addition to Timberlake, West, Rihanna and Winehouse are all scheduled to perform, as are Timbaland, Fall Out Boy, Chris Brown, Lily Allen and the Foo Fighters. Celebrity deejay Mark Ronson, who recently released his own album, Version, on which Allen and Winehouse are both featured, will provide the rest of the evening's musical accompaniment.
Other big-name nominees this year include Fergie, whose "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Glamorous" earned her a nod for Female Artist of the Year; Fall Out Boy, which scored a Best Group nomination; Daughtry, whose American Idol reject tune "Home" was nominated for Monster Single of the Year; and Carrie Underwood, who, defying all laws of freshness, has been nominated yet again as Best New Artist, despite her debut album having been released nearly two whole years ago.
As always, the Best New Artist category will be solely determined by fan voting, which can be done by logging on to MTV's Website.
The 2007 MTV VMA Awards air live Sept. 9.
