A CSI: Miami Resurrection
One would think that humid Miami air wouldn't do much in the preservation department. But Detective Tim Speedle is looking awfully flush.
CBS confirmed to E! News Monday that Rory Cochrane, whose character was killed off during CSI: Miami's third-season premiere back in 2004, will be back for an unspecified number of episodes this year.
Back…from the dead.
"He will be reprising the role of Tim Speedle and it's not a flashback," a network spokesperson said. "He will be interacting with his old partner and friend, Eric Delko (Adam Rodriguez)."
There's no word as to how Jerry Bruckheimer's minions are going to explain Speedle's resurrection, but you've got your faking death, your witness protection, your evil schemes…etc. But now, at least, Speedle, who was gunned down during a police shootout after his own weapon malfunctioned, has a shot at redemption.
"It was lame," Cochrane told TV Guide's Website after his farewell episode aired, referring to his character's unceremonious demise. "He got shot last year because of the same [gun malfunction]. It doesn't make sense. I mean, Speedle knows all these forensics things, and then he doesn't clean his gun?"
Cochrane, who starred in the cult teen faves Dazed & Confused and Empire Records and appeared last year in Richard Linklater's animated take on Philip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly, had reportedly asked to be written off the show to escape what he called "the daily grind." Mission accomplished, considering a caveat in his six-year contract required that he abstain from any other TV work until 2008.
But by keeping it all in the family, apparently, the 35-year-old Cochrane is back in business.
Meanwhile, a little to the north, former Dawson's Creek star Kerr Smith has signed on as a recurring character on CSI: NY. Smith, who played Jack on the WB hit, will show up in the Big Apple as Drew Becker, a forged documents expert and potential love interest for Melina Kanakaredes' Stella Bonasera.
Since mixing it up in Capeside, Smith, 35, has starred in the high-profile yet short-lived series E-Ring and Justice, and guest-starred on Charmed, The Closer and, in 2005, CSI: Miami.
His character, however, did not, at one point, die. So, Kerr will not be required to give a major explanation as to why—and how—he's back in the CSI fold come fall.
