HSM Star Ready to Cut Loose
Kick off your Sunday shoes—Footloose is making a comeback.
Paramount is reworking the 1984 film that made Kevin Bacon a star into a new big-screen musical, Daily Variety reports.
Zac Efron, star of High School Musical and the upcoming Hairspray, is in talks to play Ren McCormack, the rebellious city kid who moves to a Podunk town where dancing and rock music have been outlawed.
With the end of the school year just around the corner, Ren comes up with a plan to shake things up by skirting authority and throwing a rockin' prom for his fellow seniors.
Kenny Ortega, who directed Efron in the Disney Channel megahit, is in negotiations to helm and choreograph the film, while Dylan Sellers will produce.
Footloose was already turned into a Broadway show that played at the Richard Rogers Theatre from October 1998 to July 2000.
Though the stage production received a mixed reception from critics, it was popular with audiences and was nominated for several Tony Awards in 1999.
Meanwhile, the London production of Footloose—The Musical opened last April at the Novello Theatre on the Strand after two national tours of the UK.
It played to packed houses through November, then embarked on a third regional tour, as the theater was unavailable for a more extended run. The production is due to return to London's West End this fall.
Aside from his role in Hairspray, where he plays teen heartthrob Link Larkin alongside John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer, Efron will reprise his career-launching gig as Troy Bolton in High School Musical 2. The Disney Channel sequel debuts July 17, three days before Hairspray opens nationwide.
