Paris' Declaration on Independence Day
Paris Hilton has a message for her fellow Americans: Don't be like me.
"Happy 4th of July everyone, and remember to be responsible and have a designated driver!" the heiress and reality star wrote in a blog entry posted on her MySpace page Tuesday night.
Hilton, as if you needed reminding, recently served 23 days in a Los Angeles County jail for probation violations stemming from a conviction for alcohol-related reckless driving.
In an interview with CNN's Larry King last week, Hilton promised she would "never make that mistake again," referring to her DUI arrest last September.
On Monday, a spokeswoman for Mothers Against Drunk Driving expressed "reservations" about Hilton's devotion to the group's no-drinking-and-driving cause.
"Typically, we've only worked with high-profile figures if there's true responsibility for those actions," MADD's Misty Moyse told an L.A. wire service.
Hilton's camp has not directly responded to MADD. The MySpace post, mostly an expression of thanks to those who have sent "letters of love and support," marks her first personal communiqué on the site.
Hilton returned to Los Angeles on Tuesday following a five-day, post-jail get-away, or as she put it: "my much needed vacation in Maui."
As for her own Fourth plans, Hilton spent the day at a Malibu beach house adjacent to one being used by Lindsay Lohan, who was taking a break from rehab. The former party pals spent some time together before returning to their respective abodes.
