Shop Oprah Style
Because the Oprah Winfrey empire just wasn't big enough already.
The high priestess of daytime has broken ground on the inaugural Oprah-branded retail store located just across the street from her Harpo Studios in Chicago's West Loop.
Construction on the 4,500-square-foot commercial space is in the earliest stages, and while Winfrey and her cronies have yet to announce an opening date for the endeavor, a Harpo spokesperson told Chicago's CBS affiliate that the store will be chock full of signature Oprah products.
Among them will be most of the novelty items already available on Winfrey's Website, including beach totes, workout gear and iPod covers, all emblazoned with the talk host's name, as well as a selection, presumably, of Oprah's Book Club tomes and various other Winfrey-approved items, such as African baskets and art.
Carpenter Jim Giudice, who's working on the construction, also let slip another aspect of the would-be flagship, telling the local news station that the store will also house "a little café."
Which pretty much guarantees that the store, designed to contain and capitalize on the masses streaming out of Winfrey's audience after they view a taping of the show, will soon become a tourist attraction in its own right.
And thus become one more cog in Winfrey's ever-expanding empire, which already includes a magazine, book club, Broadway musical, satellite radio channel, and, of course, the film and TV production company behind her eponymous chatfest.
We're guessing that once opened, the Oprah emporium will be featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show—and, if all goes according to plan, live beyond. Winfrey's television is expected to run through the 2010-11 season, taking her through 25 years of hosting.
