McCartney Paternity Probe Takes Wing
German prosecutors have decided to let Paul McCartney be.
Authorities said Friday that they were dropping an investigation into a 46-year-old Berlin woman's claim that the former Beatle is her father and that he faked a paternity test more than two decades ago in a bid to deny their relationship.
Bettina Huebers has long claimed to be the product of an affair McCartney allegedly carried on with her mother in Hamburg from 1959 to 1962. She first filed a paternity suit against the musician in the early '80s, but a German court dismissed the case after the singer submitted to a blood test that came back negative.
In her most recent complaint, Huebers accused McCartney of fraud, alleging that he sent a body double to the test in order to ensure the results would be negative. As proof, she cited the signature on the documents, which she said was from a right-handed person, while McCartney is left-handed.
However, Berlin's state prosecutors office brought Huebers' latest attempt to prove her Beatle lineage to a crashing halt this week, after determining the statute of limitations on her claim had expired.
"An examination of the complaint filed and an evaluation of the civil action to determine paternity in 1984 found any criminal act alleged by the woman filing the complaint--even if it happened--has passed the statute of limitations," spokesman Michael Grunwald said in a statement.
McCartney declined to comment on the situation.
The singer will release his latest album, Memory Almost Full, through Starbucks' newly launched Hear Music record label on June 5. A music video for the track "Dance Tonight," featuring a cameo from Natalie Portman, debuted on YouTube Wednesday.
Memory is McCartney's 21st solo album and will be his first album ever to be made available for legal download online through the iTunes Music Store, following a settlement in the lengthy trademark dispute between Apple Corps, the company that oversees the Beatles interests, and Apple Inc.
Tunes from the Fab Four's catalogue are expected to follow suit in the near future.
