Dukes Car Buyer Bails
He's just a good ol' boy, doin' no harm—does he really deserve this?
Former Dukes of Hazzard star John Schneider, Bo Duke in the classic 1980s CBS series, made headlines last week when an eBay auction for his personal hill-flattening, curve-straightening General Lee sold for nearly $10 million, a record for the auction site.
But faster than the Duke boys could say "Yeeeeehaw!" the winning bid has turned out to be a hoax.
Now, Schneider plans to put his replica of the famed gravity-defying hot rod back on the block to help bankroll a new film project.
The 47-year-old actor-singer was in Las Vegas for a promotional appearance and couldn't be reached for comment.
But his rep, Allen Stockman, says the actor was disappointed with the fraudulent bid.
"The devil's advocate in him kind of expected it," he tells the Ventura Star newspaper.
Stockman, who has helped Schneider hawk his movie and TV memorabilia over the past three years, says the actor has filed a "failure to pay" complaint with eBay over the wrecked auction. Schneider is also considering suing the buyer, fishbashr1, who's identified on his eBay page as William Fisher.
Fisher, believed to be a Southern California entrepreneur who runs knifecollectors.com with no affiliaton to Boss Hogg, did not reply to emails seeking comment. His $9.9 million bid beat out the second highest bid by $100.
According to an eBay spokesperson, the company does not keep track of bogus bidders. But when bidding soared on the General Lee, a customer service rep suggested Stockman and Schneider only allow pre-qualified buyers, who could verify they indeed had the cash, to participate.
Schneider's General Lee is a replica of the 1969 Dodge Chargers used in the TV shows and movie that he has shown off at auto shows and races. The actor plans another auction, but this time with a bricks-and-mortar auction house to avoid a repeat of last week's hoax and to prove his garage sale was no publicity stunt.
Schneider appeared as Jonathan Kent in Smallville, before the character was killed off last year. He recently starred in the self-financed family film, Collier & Co. – Hot Pursuit! and, per IMDb, has roles in several upcoming independent flicks, including a comedy, Beautiful Loser, two thrillers, Conjurer and Terminal Trap, and two TV movies, Lake Placid 2 and Ogre.
As for his old show, CMT just announced that The Dukes of Hazzard will end its two-year run on the cable channel at the end of the summer after airing all 147 episodes. Dukes devotees will be able to catch Schneider and Catherine Bach, aka Daisy Duke, and several other cast members at DukesFest, a Dukes of Hazzard fan gathering set for June 2-3 in Nashville.
