Pennington on DUI: This Is My Wake-Up Call

The tool belt-sporting carpenter of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition fame issued a mea culpa Monday after logging some time in a Los Angeles jail during the weekend on a driving-under-the-influence charge.
Pennington, 42, was arrested at about 12:15 a.m. Saturday by Los Angeles Police Department officers in the city's Westside neighborhood, a department spokeswoman said Monday. He was released at 2:50 a.m. after posting $5,000 bail. A court hearing on the misdemeanor is set for June 4.
No further details were immediately available, but the TV handyman was quick to work damage control.
"I made an error in judgment. We all make mistakes, however this is about accountability," he said in a statement. "Under no circumstances should anyone consume alcohol while driving. I could have jeopardized the lives of others and I am grateful there was no accident or harm done to anyone. This was my wake-up call.
"I also want to apologize to my fans, ABC Television and my design team for my lapse in judgment and the embarrassment I have caused."
After stints as a carpenter, graphic artist and model, Pennington hit the big time on TLC's Trading Spaces as the resident hammer-wielding hunk before graduating to Extreme Makeover. He's won two Emmys as host of the hit feel-good home-improvement show and parlayed that success into a signature line of home furnishings at Sears.
He also wrote the bestselling 2003 book Ty's Tricks: Home Repair Secrets Plus Cheap and Easy Projects to Transform Any Room, which features a chapter titled "How I Built a Champagne Home on a Beer Budget."
