Custody Judge Won't Hassle Hoff's Kids

A Los Angeles judge is doing his best to make sure that the Hasselhoff girls don't suffer the same fate as Ireland Baldwin.

Superior Court Judge Mark A. Juhas has granted a one-month delay in the ongoing custody tug-of-war between David Hasselhoff and Pamela Bach, allowing for a psychologist to evaluate the well-being of the divorcés' two teenage daughters in the wake of an increasingly personal and acrimonious legal tussle.

"I am concerned that the level of conflict is difficult for these two young ladies to navigate in," Juhas said in court Tuesday in a hearing that marked the debut of Bach's new attorney, Debra Opri, who formerly ran point for Larry Birkhead.

During the proceedings—for which Bach was present but Hasselhoff, currently starring in The Producers in Las Vegas, was not—Juhas granted Bach her request for a delay, setting a new spousal support and custody hearing date of June 1.

In the meantime, Juhas said he will meet with a therapist to determine the severity of the effect that Bach and Hasselhoff's publicly played out legal woes are having on their 14-year-old daughter Hayley, who, along with 16-year-old sister Taylor Ann, live with Bach.

"It's been a year of hell for my daughters," Bach said outside the courtroom, who went on to tell reporters that she suffered both emotional and verbal abuse from Hasselhoff . "If I didn't have a restraining order, there would be physical abuse."

Inside the courtroom, the erstwhile Baywatch star's attorney, Melvin S. Goldsman, argued against the delay, telling Juhas that the 14-year-old's psychologist had grown increasingly concerned about the girl's living situation and, while he did not elaborate as to the basis of the concerns, insisted that Hayley would be better off living with her father.

Goldsman also claimed that the proceedings, clocking in at 16 months and counting, had gone on too long already.

For her part, Opri said she requested the delay not only to ensure the welfare of Hayley, but to allow her time to delve in Hasselhoff's finances "to find out where he has hundreds of millions of dollars hidden" after Bach complained that she has not been receiving her full due of spousal and child support.

Goldsman denied that his client was underpaying Bach and said that the ex-Knight Rider's financial records had been available to his ex's rotating roster of attorneys for months.

The former fun couple tied the knot in January 1989 and were married for 16 years before Hasselhoff filed for divorce in January 2006, citing irreconcilable differences. Just one day after his papers hit the courthouse, Bach filed a counterclaim.

Subsequent months saw their battle play out in the headlines, with Bach accusing him of abusing her in all manner of ways, while Hasselhoff retaliated with accusations that Bach was a drug addict and unfit mother.

Last fall, court papers that Juhas had ordered sealed were mistakenly entered into the public record, and with them allegations that the actor carried on an affair with the nanny, a restraining order Bach received against Hasselhoff and drug test results from earlier in the year proving that Bach had tested positive for cocaine.

Aside from the June 1 custody hearing, a June 19 court date has been set to deal with outlying motions in the case.
