View's Hasselbeck Maternal Minded
Oh, mama. The cohosts are dropping like flies over on The View—contract-eschewing, pregnant flies, that is.
Less than a week after Rosie O'Donnell announced that she would be leaving her morning moderator post in June comes word from conservative cohort Elisabeth Hasselbeck that she, too, will be taking a leave of absence from the chatfest, albeit a much less permanent one.
Hasselbeck announced on Monday's show that she is expecting her second child with football hubby Tim, with the little one due in early November.
The 29-year-old broke the impending stork delivery news after being asked by O'Donnell if there was "anything new" in her life.
"Um, just a couple of things," she said. "Like, I'm totally three months pregnant."
"I figured that we're going to be lonely without you," Hasselbeck said to O'Donnell. "So Tim and I thought we should get busy and maybe make a little cohost."
The former Survivor star went on to say that she and her New York Giants quarterback hubby did not know the baby's sex and would wait until the child's birth to find out.
Of course, while Hasselbeck and her maternity leaving ways will no doubt leave Barbara Walters in a hosting lurch—just Walters, Joy Behar and an as yet unnamed O'Donnell replacement will remain—the birth date should more than deliver.
"When you said you had an announcement, my heart sank!" Walters said on the show.
Still, there is a heart-warming consolation: after learning of the November due date, Walters asked Hasselbeck what was so special about the month, to which both she and O'Donnell called out, "Sweeps!"
"That's a gift to you," Hasselbeck said, referring to the housewife-supplied ratings boon that a ready-to-burst cohost will likely bring to the morning staple.
"Perfect timing," O'Donnell noted. "Kelly Ripa always gave birth during sweeps."
Hasselbeck's confetti-accentuated announcement was scooped by ABC earlier this morning, with the network releasing a statement tipping viewers off to the big reveal.
"Tim and I are incredibly thankful and excited," the mother-to-be said in the corporate statement.
It'll be the second child for the Hasselbeck couple, who will mark their five-year anniversary this July.
The camera-ready twosome welcomed their first child, daughter Grace Elisabeth, who shares a birthday with papa Tim, on Apr. 6, 2005. After the birth, Hasselbeck took six weeks maternity leave from the then-Meredith Vieira and Star Jones-supplemented show.
Last week, Walters announced on air that she and fellow executive producer Bill Geddie had yet to begin the search to replace O'Donnell.
