Whale Rider Teen Gives Birth
Keisha Castle-Hughes has traded whale riding for stork welcoming.
The 17-year-old Whale Rider star gave birth to a baby girl last Wednesday in New Zealand, her publicist confirmed today.
Felicity-Amore checked in at seven pounds, six ounces. Both newborn and new mom are doing well, according to a statement from Castle-Hughes and the baby's father, Bradley Hull, 19—the actress' boyfriend.
Castle-Hughes made waves when she announced her pregnancy last year at age 16, just a month before her turn as the Virgin Mary in The Nativity Story hit the big screen. Her status as an unmarried pregnant teen drew ire from the media and several conservatives.
"I felt like I had to hide," she said recently in an interview with Television New Zealand. "I felt like it was bad for me to be happy about it."
Still, Castle-Hughes, who also played the queen of Naboo in Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith, was able to ride out the media glare, telling reporters in her native New Zealand earlier this month that "if it wasn't meant to happen now, it wouldn't have happened now."
Of course, it's not the first time the actress has made headlines for her youthful endeavors. She was 13 when she scored a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her acting debut in 2002's Whale Rider, going down in history as the youngest person to achieve such a feat.
And it doesn't look like motherhood will slow her down any. Per IMDb, she's currently got one film, the Aussie coming-of-age story Hey, Hey, It's Esther Blueburger, in the can. She's also set to star in the upcoming fantasy drama The Vintner's Luck.
