Are You Related to the Next Jackson Family?
Because the first Jackson family turned out so well...
Members of the scandal-prone show-biz household that brought you "ABC," "I Want You Back" and La Toya are teaming with CBS for a reality show about the search for a new band of brothers, if not cousins
CBS is in for at least eight episodes of the all-in-the-family competition to be called Pop Dynasty, the network confirmed Wednesday. No launch date was announced. Nor was any Michael or Janet Jackson.
As first reported by Variety, the still-in-the-works show will be fronted by three members of the Jackson family's B-team: Jermaine, Tito and La Toya.
The siblings, all now in their 50s, will serve as judges, à la American Idol's Simon, Randy and Paula.
The biggest name mentioned in the Variety story belonged not to a member of the actual Jackson family, but to Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, said to be one of the project's behind-the-scene players, along with Jermaine Jackson.
A rep for Michael Jackson, the family's biggest hit-maker, didn't return a call Wednesday gauging his potential interest or involvement in Pop Dynasty.
Not including courtroom scenes from Michael Jackson's 2005 child-molestation trial, the Jacksons haven't sold themselves much as a group since the heyday of the Jackson 5 or its redubbed self, the Jacksons.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the Jacksons, essentially meaning brothers Jermaine, Tito, Jackie, Marlon, Michael and later Randy, starred on the music charts, arena stages, Saturday-morning cartoons and prime-time variety shows. Sisters Rebbie, La Toya and Janet each launched solo careers of varying degrees of success, essentially meaning Janet launched a solo career of Grammy-winning fame and Super Bowl-disrobing infamy, while Rebbie and La Toya didn't.
According to Variety, however, La Toya Jackson did impress CBS with her turn on this season's short-lived reality series, Armed & Famous. In the trade-paper lingo's, "Eye execs thought Jackson popped."
Tito Jackson might be able to tell the network how difficult it is for a family group to pop in the public eye. His three sons started their own family band in the 1990s, 3T, that, while not a bust, was nowhere near a Jackson 5-sized hit.
Those who can't wait for Pop Dynasty, and (some of) the Jacksons' return to prime time, might consider buying the family, via a Las Vegas auction next month.
